Ecological Benefits
• Early flowers provide nectar and pollen. Female berries feed birds, and the foliage supports butterfly caterpillars.
Why We Recommend It
Spicebush is one of the best native shrubs for adding wildlife value to a shaded landscape. Its early yellow flowers provide nectar and pollen, aromatic foliage supports Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillars, and female plants produce red berries used by birds. We recommend it for woodland gardens, moist shaded yards, naturalized hedges, and rain-garden edges. Young plants are often sold without a known sex, so berries require both a male and female and cannot be guaranteed from a single plant.
