• Evergreen foliage provides nesting and winter shelter. Seeds and browse support birds and mammals, and foliage hosts native caterpillars.
Why We Recommend It
Northern White-cedar is a native evergreen for dense privacy screens, windbreaks, moist woodland edges, and large hedges. We recommend it where dependable soil moisture and year-round wildlife cover are priorities. Its foliage provides nesting and winter shelter, seeds feed birds, and the plant supports native caterpillars. This species is highly vulnerable to deer browsing, bagworms, drought, road salt, and hot reflected conditions, so it needs careful siting, regular watering during establishment, and protection where deer pressure is heavy.
