Ecological Benefits
• Flowers provide nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies, and other insects. Seeds are eaten by birds and small mammals.
Why We Recommend It
New Jersey Tea is a compact native shrub that performs especially well in dry, sunny landscapes. Its showy white summer flowers draw a remarkable variety of native bees and butterflies, and the foliage supports Mottled Duskywing caterpillars. We recommend it for pollinator gardens, prairie edges, rocky slopes, and low informal hedges where excellent drainage is available. Once established it handles heat and drought, but it dislikes wet soil and develops deep roots that make later transplanting difficult.
