Why We Recommend It
Leadplant is an excellent choice for a hot, dry landscape where many shrubs would struggle. Its compact form, unusual purple flower spikes, and deep root system make it especially useful in prairie gardens, dry borders, rocky soils, and sunny slopes. Native bees and butterflies use the flowers, and several butterflies use legumes like leadplant as caterpillar food. We recommend planting it where it can remain undisturbed, since it establishes slowly and becomes difficult to transplant once rooted.

Care/behavior information: Slow to establish because it develops a deep root system. Cut back old stems in late winter if a tidier appearance is desired.
