Why We Recommend It
Low Scape Mound® Black Chokeberry offers the toughness and seasonal interest of the native species in a much lower, more compact form. We recommend it for edging, mass plantings, low foundation beds, rain gardens, and slopes where a durable groundcover shrub is needed. White spring flowers support pollinators, dark fruit feeds wildlife, and red fall color extends the display. It tolerates both drought and periodic wetness, although suckers may travel beyond the original mound.
Good to Know
• Compact native groundcover shrub
• White spring flowers, dark fruit, and red fall color
• Tough and adaptable to difficult sites
Care/behavior information: Little pruning is needed. Prune immediately after bloom if necessary and remove unwanted suckers where spread is not desired.
Warning or placement concerns (if applicable): The plant can travel by suckers beyond its original mound. Fruit is edible but very astringent unless processed.
Notable wildlife detail (if applicable):
Deer resistant (if applicable): Yes
Rabbit resistant (if applicable):
Special tolerances: Drought; wet soil; salt; heat; erosion
